Welcome!

My namn is Sofia Bennrup. I was born in May 1981 on a Friday.  Today I live in Malmö, in a region called Skåne, in the south of Sweden.

I am a creative person and convinced that you can find materials for artwork in places you usually wouldn’t think of.  Also I save money when I use what I already have or find for free (trash into cash!). You don’t always have to buy newly produced materials. The environment benefits from this too. Paintings can become interesting and personal when it’s not what you expect and there´s a history behind it, either frame/canvas and artwork or both.

Mostly I use acrylic paint, I like how fast it’s drying and you can put layer over layer. I have painted more with oils in the past but it´s not practical when you have a small living space as I have now, together with an old cat-lady. I discovered water mixable oil paint a while ago and I love to use lamp black and titanium white for portraits. Also the format has been getting smaller. It feels good and kind of intimate when you get so close to the canvas, forming face expressions. Very small changes with the brush makes a big difference. That is intriguing.

My formal education as an artist consists of painting courses at Fridhems folkhögskola and Östra Grevies folkhögskola.  In 2021 I graduated from an education (pattern construction/ mönsterkonstruktion and fashion drawing) at Tillskärarakademin in Malmö.  It also fits to call me a natural autodidact. I´m a sponge.

I’ve also been making  artwork for music bands (Nonexist, Andromeda, Murdered beats). It’s more digital art but also creative. With a combination of my sketches and manipulation with effects and patterns in Photoshop this can become some really cool stuff.

Latest artistic work was a book cover for a local writer/poet (“förberedelser för brutalt uppvaknande” 2022). He´s a very inspiring person for me and who most likely will effect my art in the future. He brings clarity and excitement in my life –  along with a lot of love. He makes me  more curious and amazed of the “little” things just around the corner.

In addition to painting I have a passion for sewing and together with my interest for the environment  this is what I dream of combining and work with. Slow fashion, mending, remake, patch-work for making fabric.

I’m amazed of the versatility and splendor of the animal and plant kingdom. I don’t eat meat and try to live as vegan as possible. To tread gently on mother earth is very important for me.  So hiking, exploring and learning the birds, plants and the nature of my surrounding is an important reoccurring activity in my life . The exiting world is just outside your front door and it´s there for grabs! (One of the most precious things about my home country is the “Allemansrätten”.  The freedom, under responsibility, to pick plants, berries and mushrooms for example.  That´s a wonderful thing and it needs to be protected). Also reading and prepping, understanding how things work inspires me to be a  more logical person, increasing the ability to make good choices.
